The Grave
by Rav Sha'ul

The Bible describes "the grave" which is English for many different things in Hebrew which seem to have more than one level as does "heaven". In Luke 16:19–31 we see two very different places after you die, a place of torment and a place called Abraham's Bosom which is what is referred to as "paradise" the place Yahusha and the thief went that day. These are all parables and physical metaphors to help us understand the Spiritual realm.  They are parables they are not intended to be literal.  In the Hebrew Bible (the true scriptures) prior to Israel being taken captive by Babylon there was only one place and it was known as Sheol.  Coming out of Babylon the Jews began to adopt Babylonian concepts and what was simply the grave took on the attributes of the pagan Hades:

Sheol

She'ol (/ˈʃiːoʊl/ SHEE-ohl or /ˈʃiːəl/ SHEE-əl; Hebrew שְׁאוֹל Šʾôl), translated as "grave", "pit", or "abode of the dead", is the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible's underworld, a place of darkness to which all the dead go, both the righteous and the unrighteous, regardless of the moral choices made in life, a place of stillness and darkness cut off from God.

While the Old Testament writings describe Sheol as the permanent place of the dead (an eternal state of being dead), in the Second Temple period (roughly 500 BCE-70 CE) a more diverse set of ideas developed: in some texts, Sheol is the home of both the righteous and the wicked, separated into respective compartments; in others, it was a place of punishment, meant for the wicked dead alone. When the Hebrew scriptures were translated into Greek in ancient Alexandria around 200 BC the word "Hades" (the Greek underworld) was substituted for Sheol, and this is reflected in the New Testament where Hades is both the underworld of the dead and the personification of the evil it represents.

Hellenism of the concept of the grave

Today we just glance over the term “Hellenized” and think of that term as simply translating the Hebrew texts into the Greek language.  That is not at all what happened nor what the term “Hellenized” means.  Hellenism is the ancient Greek religion.  Hellenized is taking that ancient Greek religion and blending it with the Truth of Yahuah also known as syncretism.

Greek religion (alternatively Hellenism, Greek: Ἑλληνισμός) encompasses the collection of beliefs and rituals practiced in ancient Greece in the form of both popular public religion and cult practices. …  Many Greek people recognized the major gods and goddesses: Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Ares, Dionysus, Hephaestus, Athena, Hermes, Demeter, Heracles, Hestia, Asclepius and Hera though philosophies such as Stoicism and some forms of Platonism.

As I explained in this book, the concepts of LOGOS and The Trinity are exactly such Hellenism and the doctrine of Incarnation is based on Platonism not found in the Hebrew Scriptures.  So too are our concepts of death, Hell, and Heaven.  They are a result of Hellenism and pagan philosophies and beliefs.   The pagan word and philosophy for the after life Hades replaced the Hebrew word and concept of Sheol.

Afterlife

The Greeks believed in an underworld where the spirits of the dead went after death. It was commonly supposed that unless the proper funeral rituals were performed, the deceased person's spirit would never reach the underworld and so would haunt the upper world as a ghost forever. One of the most widespread areas of the underworld was known as Hades. This was ruled over by a god, a brother of Zeus, who was called Hades (his realm was originally called 'the place of Hades'). Another realm, called Tartarus, was the place where the damned were thought to go, a place of torment. A third realm, Elysium, was a pleasant place where the virtuous dead and initiates in the mystery cults were said to dwell.

In Christianity the popular belief is that there is a cosmic battle between God (Zeus) and Satan (the god Hades) battling out for the souls of men. The damned are tormented forever in a place called Hell (Hades) while the righteous go to a place called Heaven (Elysium).   All of this is totally unscriptural and pagan in origin.

We need to properly understand the truths of these things because if we are to believe Christianity my poor loving and most respected Grandmother is going to be tortured in hell for all eternity for accepting Jesus!  This is without a doubt one of the main objections to a “Christian” admitting that Christianity is not true.  They simply cannot believe that their loved ones are going to Hell where they will be eternally tortured by Yahuah.  The concept of Hell becomes, therefore, a stumbling block to them to accept the Truth.

Is my Grandmother going to “Hell” for accepting “Jesus”?

As with just about every Christian doctrine the teaching about “Hell” is an utter lie based on pagan philosophies.   In this section I want to explain the reality of death, Hell, and the resurrection.  We have to be able to make a person understand that their loved ones do not burn in Hell for eternity.  They need to know that in reality Yahuah gave them a wonderful gift called Life.  They simply didn’t give it back to Him and opt for Eternal Life by denying "self".  They died in their selfishness and they ceased to exist with this life as their reward from Yahuah.  They were able to live however they wanted, do their own will, and enjoy this life and all the physical pleasures it offers.  Yahuah does not impose discipline on those who are not His children because this life is their reward:

Hebrews 12

4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of Yahuah’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because Yahuah disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

7 Endure hardship as discipline; Yahuah is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
